Why hydration matters
Water is your body’s fuel: it keeps muscles and joints working, helps prevent cramps, and improves focus. Even on short runs, drinking properly helps you maintain energy and peak performance.
Before your run
Drink about 300–500 ml of water 1–2 hours before you head out. If the run will last longer than 45 minutes, you can take small amounts of sports drinks to replenish salts and electrolytes. Avoid sugary or carbonated drinks right before training.
During your run
For runs up to 45 minutes, plain water is enough. For longer or harder sessions, add sports drinks with sodium, potassium, and carbohydrates. Take small sips every 15–20 minutes—the goal is steady hydration without weighing down your stomach.
After your run
Rehydrating after training is essential. Slowly drink 500–700 ml of water within 30 minutes of finishing. After long or very sweaty runs, consider electrolyte supplements to restore your body’s balance.
Hydration and body temperature
Running in summer or hot environments needs extra care. Slightly increase your water intake and plan stops if needed. Breathable clothing helps reduce fluid loss and keeps your core temperature stable.
Listen to your body
Pay attention to thirst, dry lips, cramps, or excessive fatigue—they’re signs you need to drink more. Checking urine color is a simple guide: pale means you’re well hydrated; dark means you need more fluids.
Conclusion: water is your best ally
Don’t wait until you’re thirsty to drink. A well-hydrated body runs faster and recovers sooner. Always carry a bottle or plan your route around available water fountains.
